Perdue Stadium Gets a Major League Upgrade

E-mail Print
Salisbury, MD As with most minor league ball clubs, Salisbury, Maryland’s Delmarva Shorebirds know who they’re playing for. The 5,200 seats of Arthur Perdue Stadium might host a few hard-core fans keeping statistics, but on any given day most of those seats are filled with folks out for a day of family-friendly entertainment. The team has a strong focus on kids, with game promotions for area Little League teams, a free ticket night for good students, and a seven-foot tall mascot named Sherman who makes appearances in the community and entertains during games.

Key to the experience is getting the sound out to every seat in the house. Concerned about the intelligibility of an aging sound system, the team contacted DSL Sound of Hagerstown to talk about an upgrade. The goals were typical for a decade-old sporting venue: better sound, longer life, better weather resistance and even coverage throughout the main seating bowl and upper deck, as well as the greenbelt beyond the outfield walls.

DSL’s Robert Musser designed a hybrid distributed system based on Community’s R-Series of weather-resistant, full-range speakers. “The R-Series was really the best choice for consistent, intelligible coverage throughout the park,” says Musser. “There’s nothing else out there that can deliver that level of performance at an affordable price point, and stand up to the Atlantic Coast weather.”

To avoid interference with sightlines, Musser’s proposal called for a series of eight R.5-66TZ loudspeakers and WET112 subwoofers to be mounted in pairs from custom brackets spaced around the perimeter, covering both the upper deck and the lower box seats. An additional 40 R.25-94TX speakers are located beneath the balcony, providing direct coverage to patrons seated in the shade, while the lawn area beyond the outfield wall is covered by a pair of R2-694X 3-way, full-range loudspeakers mounted on the side wall of the skyboxes.

With the installation contract being signed just three weeks before opening day, Musser points to Community’s support as yet another reason for choosing their loudspeakers. “Community really bent over backwards to help us get the project done,” he says. “Having been to their factory and seen their quality control and attention to detail, it didn’t surprise me that their support would be just as impressive.”
